FAMU School of Business and Industry Hosts Financial Literacy Week

The Florida A&M University (FAMU) School of Business and Industry (SBI) hosts a Financial Literacy Week to help students increase their knowledge about money, budgeting and investing.

“Education on financial literacy and wellness is important for our students so that we can work toward closing the wealth gap and increasing economic security for future generations,” said SBI Dean Shawnta Friday-Stroud, Ph.D.

SBI is partnering with the Society for Financial Education and Professional Development (SFEPD) Financial Ambassadors and Scout, a Black- and women-founded financial education startup based out of New York and Los Angeles focused on building wealth in the Black community through financial literacy education.

Scout is partnering with FAMU alumnus Will Packer to help FAMU students get started on their investment journey to build their net worth, said SBI Associate Professor Samique March-Dallas, Ph.D.

“The time value of money indicates that the sooner you start building wealth, then the more wealth you will aggregate in the long term. Our students want to build generational wealth and close the wealth gap so they must take advantage of starting to invest early and consistently to build their net worth. This week is a push to get started on this journey,” said March-Dallas, who is co-hosting the week of activities with colleague Inger Daniels, Ph.D., an assistant professor of Finance.

Among the highlights is a. 6 p.m. Monday fireside chat with Mike Haddix, CEI and co-founder of Scout.

On Tuesday, there will be “Lit All Day,” when participants can attend hour-long sessions on financial literature from 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. in SBI G12 North. At noon Thursday, The Bag Block Party will be held on the SBI Front Lawn on FAMU Way.

“The School of Business and Industry is excited to partner with the Scout App and the Society for Financial Education and Professional Development to teach financial literacy across the FAMU campus,” Daniels said.  “It’s important for college students to start building wealth now, while time is on their side. This week, we empower our students to begin their wealth journey by providing knowledge, tools, and even a little cash.”
