About Me

Dr. Doreen Kobelo is an Associate Professor in the Division of Engineering Technology under the School of Architecture and Engineering Technology (SAET) at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU). She serves as the Director for the Division of Engineering Technology. Dr. Kobelo’s primary research area is in transportation engineering, including but not limited to traffic operation and safety, vehicle automation, intelligent transportation systems, commercial and heavy construction management. She has received funded research in these areas from a number of state, federal, and private entities. She also has authored and co-authored articles in a number of technical journals and conferences in traffic safety, traffic operations, and education in the engineering field.

Dr. Kobelo has been working with minority students in the STEM fields. She has been hosting the National Summer Transportation Institute, a summer camp funded by the Federal Highway Administration, which introduces high school students to transportation-related STEM fields. She has also been part of the FAMU STEM Day team, assisting with the demonstration and experiment portion of this annual event. As a member and university representative for Transportation Research Board, she has assisted graduate and undergraduate students in getting funded fellowships through the Dwight David Eisenhower fellowship program by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Dr. Kobelo is also a member of the FL Department of Transportation’s Occupant Protection Coalition formed to identify and prioritize state’s most pressing occupant protection issues and develop plans to maximize the state’s ability to impact crashes involving unrestrained occupants.

Dr. Kobelo received her master's of science degree and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Florida State University and her Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from The University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.
