SHAPING SUCCESS IN HOUSING

The Office of University Housing remains the epicenter of the exceptional student experience at Florida A&M University, where living on campus serves as a gateway to leadership, service, and lifelong impact. Through a dynamic portfolio of initiatives, Housing provides students with opportunities to grow beyond the classroom. From student staff employment and internships to signature leadership programs like Rattlers R.I.S.E., students are equipped with the skills and experiences needed to lead with purpose

Our commitment to service and global engagement is reflected through transformative experiences such as Alternative Spring Break and International Service-Learning trips, including our End-of-Year Service-Learning initiative in Jamaica. These opportunities allow students to expand their worldview while making meaningful contributions to communities locally and abroad. Student leadership remains at the core of the Housing experience. Through organizations such as the Residence Hall Association (RHA), National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH), Hall Councils, and the distinguished Mr. and Miss Housing court, residents are empowered to lead, advocate, and shape the culture of campus living.

Beyond leadership and service, Housing fosters a vibrant and inclusive community through intentional in-hall programming, from social engagement events like Galantine's Day and Crochet & Chat to a wide range of resident-driven experiences that build connection and belonging.

The Office of University Housing continues to lead the charge in developing student leaders, earning staff and departmental awards, such as 2025 Division of Student Affairs Department of the Year, and setting the standard for excellence in student engagement, innovation, and community building.

Participants will return not only with lifelong memories but also with expanded perspectives, enhanced leadership skills, and a renewed commitment to positively influence their campus and beyond.

The Rattlers RISE Meet and Greet, hosted by Derrick Farmer, Assistant Director for Student Learning and Success, was an opportunity for Rattlers RISE students to engage with stakeholders and campus service participants. The event introduced students to guest speakers and various academic and support services, including scholarship information, study essentials, and pathways to public service opportunities. This gathering highlighted the university’s commitment to equipping Rattlers RISE Scholars with the tools necessary for academic success and personal growth.

“Events like these ensure our students are not only prepared academically but also empowered with the knowledge and confidence to enjoy their time at FAMU fully,” said Amanda Williams, Residential engagement Coordinator, who attended the event. Such gatherings emphasize the sense of community at FAMU. By fostering connections early on, Housing and campus partners help ensure that students feel supported as they embark on their journey on the Highest of Seven Hills.

FAMU HOUSING POP-UP SHOOTS & COMPLIMENTARY HEADSHOTS

ADVANCING STUDENT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

graphic collage of photos and professional students

FAMU Housing Pop-Up Shoots are intentional, on-campus photo activations designed to support student growth beyond the residence halls. In partnership with Resident Directors, student leaders, and the Office of University Housing Marketing & Communications, these initiatives provide complimentary, high-quality professional headshots to on-campus residents, removing barriers to access and ensuring every student can present themselves at a professional standard.

These headshots serve as a critical asset as students pursue internships, leadership opportunities, graduate school, and career pathways. In an increasingly digital and competitive landscape, a strong visual presence across platforms such as LinkedIn, digital portfolios, and personal brands is essential. Through this initiative, Housing equips students with the tools to confidently enter professional spaces.

More than a photo opportunity, Pop-Up Shoots create a learning environment where students develop confidence, understand the importance of personal branding, and engage in professional presentation practices. The experience encourages students to see themselves as emerging professionals, prepared to lead, create, and represent excellence.

Simultaneously, these activations strengthen community and visibility within the residential experience. Students who participate are not only investing in their future; they are contributing to the visual storytelling of FAMU Housing, representing the culture, pride, and excellence of on-campus life across official marketing platforms.

FAMU Housing Pop-Up Shoots ultimately reflect a broader commitment: to develop students holistically, academically, socially, and professionally, while preparing them to thrive beyond the University.

CROSS DEPARTMENT COLLABORATION

KNICK KNACKS: CROCHET AND CHAT

KNICK KNACK

Knick-Knacks: Crochet and Chats' events represent more than just a creative outlet; they are intentional, cross-departmental efforts that strengthen the on-campus living experience.

By bringing together University Housing and the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution, this program creates a safe, welcoming environment where residents can relax, connect, and engage in meaningful dialogue. Activities like crocheting naturally lower stress and encourage open conversation, making it easier for students to discuss real-life challenges, including conflict, communication, and community expectations.

Housing also partners with the Rec Center for Sports leagues and outdoor events, Academic Affairs to living learning communities inside the halls, Campus Safety for safety awareness campaigns, and so many others.

These types of events are important because they:

- Promote holistic well-being

- Encourage positive peer interaction

- Teach life skills in a low-pressure setting

- Strengthen community culture

- Reduce conduct issues proactively
