FAMU Security Enhancements

FAMU Security Enhancements

The safety and well-being of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors remain among Florida A&M University's highest priorities. We are continually evaluating and strengthening our campus security measures, investing in new technology, enhancing infrastructure, and expanding law enforcement resources to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for our Rattler community.

We are grateful to Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Legislature for their continued support and investment in campus safety. Their commitment has helped FAMU make significant improvements to our security capabilities, and we remain focused on building on that progress.

Campus safety is an ongoing responsibility, and we will continue working with our law enforcement partners to identify new opportunities to strengthen protections, improve preparedness, and respond effectively to emerging challenges.

Over the past year, FAMU has implemented a number of important security enhancements, including:

  • Continued Investment in Campus Safety: Invested approximately $4.1 million in security improvements over the past year, with additional enhancements and investments planned in the coming year.

  • Expanded Security Technology and Surveillance: More than 1,300 camera monitoring points across campus, including approximately 200 new cameras brought online in the past year. Recent enhancements include 12 additional cameras near the Lawson Center and Perry Street and advanced technology options.

  • Real-Time Threat Assessment and Response: Expanded staffing and enhanced real-time monitoring and coordinated response capabilities during campus events. These resources were utilized during the homecoming incident to assist law enforcement in identifying and apprehending the suspect.

  • Increased Security and Law Enforcement Presence: Expanded security personnel and law enforcement presence across campus, including partnerships with specialized law enforcement services to provide additional security and support during major events.

  • Active Shooter Response Training: FAMU police officers completed additional active shooter response training, strengthening their preparedness and ability to respond quickly and effectively to potential threats on campus.

  • Building Hardening: Strengthening access control measures, including designated secure entry points to better manage access to campus facilities.

  • Campus Infrastructure and Safety Improvements: Enhanced campus fencing and access points to strengthen perimeter security, increased lighting in key areas to improve visibility, and implemented traffic management measures to promote pedestrian safety throughout campus.

  • Expanded Safety Signage: Installed more than 75 signs across campus communicating 24/7 surveillance measures and the University's weapons policy.
