Electrocardiograph (EKG or ECG) technicians perform diagnostic tests to aid doctors in identifying and treating cardiovascular problems in patients. With additional on-the-job EKG training or experience, you may specialize in areas such as cardiac catheterization, Holter monitoring, phonocardiography, stress testing, and vectorcardiography. You should have an interest in high-tech mechanical equipment and be able to sympathize and reassure patients who are apprehensive about the testing procedure.  

Healthcare Administration is a quickly growing field with a multitude of career path opportunities, providing the option to work in virtually any healthcare environment – including hospitals, urgent care centers, geriatrics, maternity, pediatrics or physician’s offices, as well as other outpatient and inpatient centers. Tasks could be behind the scenes in data processing and filing or at the front lines offering help to patients with billing or other paperwork-related questions. 

Medical Laboratory Assistants play a very important role in patient health. They are responsible for collecting blood, tissue and other samples from patients, and preparing samples for testing and analysis. Lab Assistants are also hands-on health workers, working directly with patients, often during sensitive times, and may accompany patients through difficult processes. Medical Lab Assistants typically work in inpatient or outpatient medical facilities, however, are often employed in private and public labs or research institutions. Some choose to specialize in biochemistry, cytology, hematology, histopathology, immunology, or microbiology. 

Certified Phlebotomy Technicians collect blood and non-blood specimens for testing, so they can be analyzed in a clinical laboratory. Specimen tests are used to diagnose illness, evaluate the effectiveness of medications and determine whether a patient is receiving proper nutrition. After gaining the Phlebotomy certification, you may work in clinical laboratories, hospitals, community health centers, nursing homes, doctor’s offices, blood donation centers and other health care facilities. 

A typical hospital uses (and reuses) tens of thousands of medical instruments every month. Although some supplies are disposable, many are not. The reusable supplies come with their own special instructions for proper cleaning and maintenance. Sterile Processing Technicians (SPTs) prepare surgical instruments and devices. They clean, inspect, test, sterilize, store and deliver devices needed for surgery in a healthcare facility.  

The role of a Surgical Technologist is to prepare operating rooms, arrange equipment, prepare patients, and assist doctors during surgeries. They have the unique opportunity to interact with patients prior to (pre), during (intra), and after (post) surgical procedures. Before surgery, a techs assemble the necessary surgical equipment and ensures all devices are in working order.
