Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Political Science

Political science is the study of politics and government at the local, state, federal, and international levels. 

About This Program

This program focuses on the theory and practice of public policies, political behavior, world views, class systems, foreign relations, law, conflict, and war.

Students will examine the United States and other nations and regions of the world from new perspectives using both humanistic outlooks and scientific reasoning.

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Political Science requires 120 semester hours to complete.


The program in political science offers a broad selection of courses and activities adapted to the needs of students who plan careers in law; the several levels of government, including the foreign (diplomatic) service; international organizations; international business and industrial organizations; private enterprise; public relations; research; teaching; and active politics.

Students interested in other vocations will find the courses very beneficial. The Bachelor of Science (B.A.) degree offers:

1) political science,
2) political science with a concentration in international relations,
3) political science with a concentration in public administration,
and
4) political science with a concentration in urban studies and economic development 

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree requires the completion of twelve (12) semester hours of foreign language, whereas the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree does not.


All students — majors and minors — must have at least a 2.0 GPA overall to qualify for graduation with a degree in any of the programs.

All courses — other than natural sciences  must be passed with a grade of “C” or better.

Bachelor of Science

A major in political science consists of thirty-three (33) semester hours.

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree requires the completion of twelve (12) semester hours of foreign language, whereas the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree does not.

All political science majors must complete a minor of eighteen (18) hours in another academic field.

Political Science majors with a public administration concentration have the same academic requirements as Political Science majors, except that public administration concentration students will minor in eighteen (18) hours of public administration instead of another academic field.
