Message from the Chair
Yolanda K. H. Bogan, Ph.D.

Thank you for your visiting the website for the Department of Social Work!  I am honored to serve as Interim Chair for this department which houses two accredited programs within the College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU).

The Council on Social Work Education’s (CSWE) accreditation of the BSW and the MSW program through 2024 speaks to the outstanding curriculum, expert teaching, and value-added field experiences provided in this department. Our BSW program, grounded in liberal arts and person-in-the-environment perspectives, prepares students for professional employment in a multitude of fields. The MSW program educates students for macro social work practice in community-based organizations and social service administration.

Our diverse faculty has expertise in child welfare, gerontology, criminal justice, substance abuse, community-based practice, social welfare policy, and research. They are dedicated to advancing knowledge through critical thought and inquiry and each is committed to fostering knowledgeable, ethical, and culturally competent leadership.  Students are encouraged to cultivate their administrative skills through a variety of honor and service organizations including the Student Social Work Association (SSWA), Social Work Association of Graduate Students (SWAGS), and Phi Alpha Honor Society.

Our program is bolstered by outstanding alumni who have made meaningful contributions to the profession in the State of Florida and throughout the world.  Dr. Victoria Warner established the department in 1974. To honor her, the department’s ongoing focus is to train highly competent social workers who are dedicated to advancing social and economic justice for communities of color and marginalized populations. You will find her spirit and influence throughout our curriculum, faculty, students, and alumni.  Join us in making a positive difference.
