Florida A&M University Southern Association of Colleges and Schools ( FAMU SACS) Office From the President Welcome to Florida A&M University’s SACS website! As we continue the tradition of Excellence with Caring, we appreciate the cooperation of administrative officers, staff, faculty members, students, trustees, and other stakeholders that have contributed to the Compliance Certification Document, the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) entitled “Enhancing Performance in Critical Thinking,” and the Focused Report as a part of our reaffirmation of accreditation process. Florida A&M University has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) since 1935 and we look forward to successfully undergoing a rigorous review process to maintain our accreditation through reaffirmation in 2009. What does accreditation by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) mean? According to the Association, it (1) “signifies that the institution has a mission appropriate to higher education, (2) has resources, programs, and services sufficient to accomplish and sustain that mission, and (3) maintains clearly specified educational objectives that are consistent with its mission and appropriate to the degrees it offers, and that indicate whether it is successful in achieving its stated goals.” This site provides access to various processes and documentation necessary for the University’s reaffirmation of accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Sincerely, James H. Ammons, Ph.D. President From the Provost and Vice President The regional body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the Southern states is the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS-COC). Its mission is the enhancement of educational quality throughout the region. Also, it strives to improve the effectiveness of institutions by ensuring that they meet standards established by the higher education community that address the needs of society and students. Florida A&M University is accredited by SACS and is seeking reaffirmation of accreditation. This process involves a collective analysis and judgment by (1) the institution’s internal constituencies, (2) an informed review by peers external to the institution, and (3) a reasoned decision by the elected members of the Commission on Colleges. Florida A&M University has submitted its Compliance Certification Document, Focused Report, and Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) entitled “Enhancing Performance in Critical Thinking.” The informed review by our peers external to the institution is in progress, and the reasoned decision by the elected members of the Commission on Colleges will be rendered at the SACS-COC Annual Conference in December 2009. We appreciate the contributions of all involved in Florida A&M University’s reaffirmation of accreditation process. Keep up the good work! Cynthia Hughes-Harris, Ph.D. Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
