Excess Credit Hours [1009.286; HB 5201] Students who exceed the hours required to complete their baccalaureate degree programs are required to pay an excess hour surcharge for each credit hour in excess. This surcharge is effective for a student who began undergraduate career at a state college or state university as first time in college student. For students who entered in; (a) 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 academic years, an excess hour Surcharge equal to 50 percent of the tuition rate for each credit hour in excess of 120 percent. This student would have attempted 24 credit hours more than required for a baccalaureate program of 120 credit hours (b) 2011-2012 academic year, an excess hour surcharge equal to 100 percent of the tuition rate for each credit hour in excess of 115 percent. This student would have attempted 18 credit hours more than required for a baccalaureate program of 120 credit hours (c) 2012-2013 academic year and thereafter, an excess hour surcharge equal to 100 percent of the tuition rate for each credit hour in excess of 110 percent. Additionally, this surcharge will continue to apply to the student throughout the baccalaureate degree program so long as the student maintain continuous enrollment. This student would have attempted 12 credit hours more than required for a baccalaureate program of 120 credit hours When calculating the number and types of hours to be included in the excess hour surcharge all credit hours for courses attempted at Florida A&M University for which the student is seeking a baccalaureate degree will be considered; including: Ø Failed courses; Ø Courses that are dropped or withdrawn from after the university's advertised last day of drop/add period except for courses from which a student withdrew due to reasons of medical or personal hardship; Ø Repeated courses, except repeated courses for which the student has paid the full cost of instruction (Repeat course charge); Ø All credit hours earned at another institution and accepted for transfer by Florida A&M University and applied toward the student's baccalaureate degree program; and Ø Graduate credit that is attempted for completion of a baccalaureate degree. Credit that is used solely for the graduate degree will not be included. Credit hours that will not be calculated in the tuition surcharge for excess hours include; Ø College credits earned through an articulated accelerated mechanism, such as AP, IB, CLEP, AICE, DANTE, Excelsior, or Dual enrollment. Ø Credit hours earned through internship programs. Ø Credit hours required for certification, recertification, or certificate programs. Ø Credit hours in courses from which a student must withdraw due to reasons of medical or personal hardship. Ø Credit hours earned by a returning student seeking a second baccalaureate degree so long as the student began the first baccalaureate program before fall 2009. Ø Credit hours taken by active-duty military personnel. Students will be required to submit documentation of their active duty status. Ø Credit hours required to achieve a dual major taken while pursuing a baccalaureate degree. Ø Remedial and English as a Second Language credit hours. This includes Foreign language courses taken by a student in order to meet State University System requirement Ø Credit hours earned in military science courses that are part of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program. Students are strongly advised to meet with their academic advisor to avoid attempting credit hours in excess of the credit hours required for their particular baccalaureate degree program.
