Certifications and Endorsements


Physical education professionals are employed in many industries, including education, health, recreation and fitness. Also, careers in the sports field, such as coaching or instructing and sports officiating, are predicted to grow substantially in the future. Therefore the HPER Department makes available the following certification program options for students who want to add marketable training that can enhance one’s career.

Certification in Physical Education (Grades K-12)

Plan One     A bachelor's or higher degree with a teacher education major in physical education, or

Plan Two     A bachelor's or higher degree with thirty (30) semester hours in physical education to include the areas specified below:

Twelve (12) semester hours in instructional design and content of physical education

PET 3230    Motor development
PET 4330    Kinesiology
PET 4401    Administration of Physical Education
PET 4351    Applied exercise physiology
PET 4640    Adaptive physical education or physical  education for exceptional students
PET 2622    Care and prevention of human injuries
PEO 3004    Theory and practice in coaching.

Certification in Health (Grades K-12)

Plan One     A bachelor's or higher degree with an undergraduate or graduate major in health, or

Plan Two     A bachelor's or higher degree with thirty (30) semester hours in physical education to include the areas specified below:

Twelve (12) semester hours in instructional design and content of physical education

HSC 3131    Mental and Counseling
HSC 3143    Prevention Approaches to Substance Abuse

 Advanced first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation training as specified below:

HSC 2400    First Aid  or a valid instructor’s first aid certificate and a valid instructor’s cardiopulmonary resuscitation certificate issued by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross
HSC 3200    Community Health
PET  2320    Applied Human Anatomy/physiology w/lab
HUN 2401    Nutrition
HSC 3133    Family Lifestyles and Sexuality
HSC 3500    Epidemiological
HSC 3120    Consumer Health
HSC 2210    Environmental Health & Safety Ed

Endorsement in Driver Education

A bachelor's or higher degree with teaching certification in another subject, and  Nine (9) semester hours in driver education to include the areas specified below:

HSC 4450  Three (3) semester hours in basic driver education
HSC 4451  Three (3) semester hours in advanced driver education, and
HSC 4460  Three (3) semester hours in administration and supervision of driver traffic safety education.

Athletic Coaching Certification

Teaching Certification in another subject, and Nine (9) semester hours in athletic coaching to include the areas specified below:

PET  2622                 Three (3) semester hours in care and prevention of athletic injuries and the effects and dangers of drug use including performance enhancing drugs
PEO  3004                Three (3) semester hours in coaching theory
PET 3820 or 3821   A course in theory and practice of coaching a specific sport, and a valid cardiopulmonary resuscitation course completion card or certificate issued by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross or an equivalent cardiopulmonary resuscitation course completion card or certificate issued by an entity approved by the Florida Department of Health pursuant to Rule 64E-2.038, F.A.C.

Certification in Dance (Grades K-12)

Plan One     A bachelor's or higher degree with an undergraduate or graduate major in dance or dance education, or

Plan Two    A bachelor's or higher degree with thirty (30) semester hours in dance to include the areas specified below:

Credits in studio techniques to include:

DAA 1200   Ballet I   (2)
DAA 2201   Ballet II  (2)
DAA 2101   Modern Dance  (2)
DAA 1500   Modern Jazz Dance  (2)

Credits in creative studio studies to include:

DAN 1680   Dance Performance  (1)

Twelve (12) semester hours in aquatics to include:
