The University Concert Choir

The Internationally acclaimed Florida A&M University Concert Choir. For nearly sixty years the FAMU Concert Choir has maintained a standard of choral excellence. The University Choir performs a diverse repertoire that spans the genres of classical, jazz, contemporary, spiritual, gospel, and other multicultural styles. The Choir’s goal is to promote and cultivate the understanding of choral music and performance as an imperative medium of artistic value and musical expression.
The choir remains visible and busy within their community and surrounding areas hosting choral projects such as: the “Annual High School Choral Day” which serves to cultivate and enhance choral singing among High Students, and the 2010 Southeastern African American Choral Festival, which featured American composer, Rosephanye Powell.
The Concert Choir are 2010 recipients of the Willie E. Jackson Choral Achievement Award (SEAAC Choral Festival) and were nominated for “Organization of the Year” FAMU Spring 2010.
In the past, the Concert Choir has performed major concerts at both the American Choral Directors Association and Music Educators Conventions. They have presented performance tours in the East & West coasts of the United States as well as places abroad such as:Valencia Spain, Alaska, and Ethiopia Africa. FAMU’s Concert Choir has also performed with major artists such as GRAMMY award winner Phil Driscoll, Richard Smallwood and the amazing Three Mo’ Tenors.
April of 2009 the Concert Choir gave a command performance in Tuskegee, ALA at the William Dawson Commemorative Choral Festival and in January of 2009 at the Florida’s Music Educator’s Convention were they served as the Exhibition Choral group to promote and present via performance illustration, the topic “The Face of Gospel Music in the Choral World”.
Florida A&M University’s Concert Choir was also 1st place winners of the Cincinnati, Ohio National Negro Spiritual Choral Competition. The choir returned to the following year to compete against all 1st place winners of the previous years. Again Florida A&M University Concert Choir was selected as 1st place winners in the “Winner of Winners” Competition.
The Concert Choir is under the direction of Mark Butler, director of Choral Studies and Activities.
