Overview
At the new FAMU Recreation Center, you will find it hard not to exercise and stay fit! Located on the corner of Wahnish Way and Osceola Rd., Phase One of this two-phase project was completed and began operations in Summer 2006. Currently 40,000 sq. ft., the FAMU Recreation Center is the flagship for the Department of Campus Recreation and was constructed to positively impact the overall health and wellness of the FAMU Campus Community. This state-of-the-art facility is primarily student run and the services proveded are funded by Student A&S Fees, as allocated by FAMU Student Government.
The Department of Campus Recreation offers an array of programs and services that foster wellness and positive socialization for the University Community. The department¹s mission is to meet the needs of a diverse student population by providing a comprehensive and innovative program of recreational, leisure and fitness activities. The department is comprised of three components: intramural sports, fitness and aerobics and Outdoor Adventures.
The department also encourages the development of leadership skills among its clientele through its student driven recreation committee. The committee is charged with the responsibility to work with various administrators, departments and clubs and organizations to further the goals and objectives of the department. In addition, the department collaborates with the Student Government Association to ensure that the department is meeting the needs and expectations of the student body in general.
The Department of Campus Recreation is housed in a $9 million state-of-the-art facility on the corner of Wahnish Way and Osceola Street. It has 3,400 square foot exercise/aerobics or multi-purpose room; a juice bar; a 700 square foot spinning room/classroom; a message therapy room and a 16,500 square foot weight training and cardio workout area on two floors. Facilities: Reception Counter Let us know how we may serve you. Staffed by our Customer Service Team, the reception counter provides a first-stop for facility patrons whether it is for information, rental services, or access to the building's facilities. The "Energy Bar" Looking for a healthy food selection? Run by an outside contractor, the "Energy Bar" provides a wide variety of nutritious & refreshing juices, smoothies and wraps to satisfy even the most hearty pre- or post-exercise appetite. Resistance & Cardiovascular Training Areas The choice is most certainly yours. Spreading over two floors, this 16,500 sq. ft. space includes 60 pieces of resistance training equipment and 50 pieces of cardiovascular training equipment; offering you the the best-of-the-best from the world's leading equipment manufacturers. The Cardio-Bridge is equipped with 12 TVs and allows you to tune-in to your favorite shows while you get in shape. Let our team of Certified Fitness Trainers & Fitness Interns know how we may assist you in meeting your health & fitness goals. Group Exercise Studio Come enjoy a fun and effective workout in a group setting! This 3,500 sq. ft. Group Exercise Studio offers a large and asthetically pleasing space, which is sure to meet your group fitness needs. Our staff of highly skilled instructors is here to motivate you through the wide variety of class formats which are offered at the FAMU Recreation Center. Locker & Shower Facilities These simple but functional facilities provide you with the necessary comforts and conveniences to meet your personal hygiene needs. Lockers in the locker rooms are provided on a semesterly-rental basis, while day-use lockers are located on each level of the facility on a day-loan basis: beside the soon-to-come Indoor Rock Climbing Wall (Lower Level), at the rear of the Resistance Training Area (Mid Level) , and on the Cardio Bridge (Upper Level). SPINNING® Room / Class Room Equipped with an extensive audio-visual system, the SPINNING® Room / Class Room provides an ideal location for the physically-challenging SPINNING® Indoor Cycling Class, or for sit-down health & fitness educational seminars.
