Major Anthony G. Sousa
Marine Officer Instructor
Major Sousa enlisted in the Marine Corps from his hometown of Sanford, Maine, and completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, in 1990. Following recruit training and Marine Combat Training at Camp Lejeune, he was trained as a combat correspondent at the Defense Information School, Fort Harrison, Indiana. He was subsequently assigned to Headquarters & Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, from 1991-1994, and deployed once in support of the Joint Task Force Guantanamo during the 1991 Haitian migrant crisis. In 1994 he was promoted to sergeant and assigned as the Marketing and Public Affairs Representative for Recruiting Station Cincinnati, Ohio. He was accepted into the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program as a staff sergeant in 1997.
Major Sousa commissioned as a second lieutenant in 2000 upon graduation from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education. He completed the Basic Officer Course and the Amphibian Officer Course in 2001, and was subsequently assigned to 3d Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division. There he completed two tours as a platoon commander, first with Company C, including deployment in 2003 to Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) in support of 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, and second with Company E’s Mobility/Counter-Mobility Platoon.
Major Sousa was assigned to a secondary MOS tour and completed the Adjutant’s Course in 2004. He was subsequently assigned to 2d Battalion, 6th Marines, 2d Marine Division, where he was promoted to captain and deployed once in support of OIF from 2005 to 2006. In 2006 he was reassigned as regimental adjutant and deployed with Regimental Combat Team 6 in support of OIF from 2007 to 2008.
Major Sousa completed the Maneuver Captains Career Course, Fort Knox, Kentucky, in 2009 and was assigned to 2d Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2d Marine Division for follow-on duty. There he deployed as an operations advisor with Military Transition Team, 2d Brigade, 1st Iraqi Army Division. Upon redeployment in 2010, he assumed command of Headquarters & Service Company, 2d Assault Amphibian Battalion.
Following company command and promotion to his current rank in 2011, Major Sousa was assigned as Executive Officer and Deputy Installation Commander, Combined Arms Training Center Camp Fuji, Japan. He assumed his current duties as Marine Officer Instructor, Naval ROTC Unit, Florida A&M University, in 2012.
Major Sousa’s personal decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Gold Star, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Gold Star and Combat Distinguishing Device, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
Major Sousa is married to the former Renee Payne of Tarpon Springs, Florida.
