Student Immersion South Africa

Description

This program will be executed through an internationalized three semester credit course, AGR 4905 Special Problems in Agronomy, offered during the Summer “C” Session starting 2012 at FAMU. Students interested in participating must register for the course. The course will include pre-departure orientation and interdisciplinary lectures, team-taught by interdisciplinary faculty, on the links between access to land and poverty reduction in South Africa, and its policy framework. The “Study in South Africa” three week immersion is a part of the course and is designed to provide students and faculty with a unique opportunity to engage in teaching, research, and extension activities, through South African partnerships with the University of Fort Hare, University of Stellenbosch, Western Cape Ministry of Agriculture, and private agricultural partners. The immersion will include lectures, workshops, student service learning projects, visits to significant historical sites and organizations. Internships with South African government, private sector agencies and organizations will be available.

Eligibility

Applicant must be an upper level undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Agricultural or Related Sciences. Applicant must also be in good academic standing.

Deadline

All required application materials must be received by April15, 2013 for Summer 2013 consideration.

Housing

Students will be housed in shared accommodations.

Travel Stipends

We offer stipends up to $2,500 per student tha is enrolled in the course. But we also encourage our students to explore additional potential sources of funding, such as their academic department, student organizations, student loans, and local businesses.
