Statewide Small Farm
WHO WE ARE
The Florida A&M University (FAMU) Statewide Small Farm Program was developed to assist and equip underserved agricultural populations including small farmers, farm laborers and their families to attain sustainable lifestyles. This program uses a holistic, participatory, multidisciplinary, systematic approach to provide relevant educational opportunities, technical information, and hands-on training to underserved populations. Through the FAMU Statewide Small Farm Program many partnerships and relationships are established and maintained between local small farmers, university faculty, staff and students, as well as community collaborators for the development of relevant educational and training sessions.
Through educational and hands-on training, the FAMU Statewide Small Farm Program has a mission to better equip small growers by providing access to knowledge about sustainable agriculture production and management systems. A wide variety of activities are hosted in order to increase knowledge and awareness of modern technologies and techniques, and agricultural resources available for farmer profitability such as: organic, bio-intensive, biodynamic, production of crops and livestock (organic poultry and goat production); alternative crops and modern marketing strategies; identifying new and local grower’s markets, and creating an active network of farmers helping farmers.
Urban Markets - Many educational institutions are interested in growing their own foods and knowing where their food comes from. The FAMU Statewide Small Farm Program takes an active role in creating unique opportunities to assist the local communities in developing gardens, and provides training and assistance to establish urban markets for consumers to enjoy natural, wholesome produce from local growers.
Schools -The Statewide Small Farm Program Integrated Curriculum Approach provides alternative learning opportunities, outdoor and indoor laboratory experiences and resources for teachers and students.
Rural Communities - The program works with communities to help find their own solutions-Sustainable community development and capacity building.

The Small Farm Programs offers educational and hands-on training sessions that are designed to impact agriculture productions/management and quality of life, including the following: health and preventative training; adult education; business planning strategies; managing your income; saving your farm.
