As a result of the laptop loan program users will have enhanced access to the library collections and other information resources, and academic achievement will be positively impacted.

Who Can Borrow?
Currently registered students and current employees of Florida A&M University who have registered for this service and have not returned a laptop late, may borrow a laptop.

What is my responsibility?
  • The borrower is totally responsible for the laptop from the time of acceptance until which time the Library Systems Staff records cleared on the Loan Agreement. The user will be charged for up to the full replacement cost ($2500) if the computer is damaged, not returned for any reason or components missing.  Registration will be blocked, graduation will be blocked, and grades will be with-held.  Library privileges will be revoked. The user will be charged with grand theft. FAMU Police Department, Property Records and Student Accounts will be contacted if equipment is not returned immediately.
  • Be computer/laptop literate.
Ask questions before making the loan.
  • Never leave the laptop unattended.
  • In case of emergency evacuation of the library -take the laptop with you as you exit the building.
  • Never borrow a laptop for someone else to use.
  • Save all personal files onto a disk. Hard drives are cleaned after every loan.
  • Laptops are for in-Library use only.

How long can I keep a laptop?
The loan period is up to four (4) hours daily.  Loans are not renewable and laptops cannot be reserved.  Laptops are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

How much is the fine for returning a laptop late?
$5.00 per hour.

How can I access the Internet?
Each laptop is equipped with a wireless card, and a modem. The wireless card enables you to sit almost anywhere in the library and have full use of the computer and Internet.

Where must I return the laptop?
The borrower must return laptops to staff at the Library Systems Support Desk. Expect to spend 10 – 15 min. to give time for the Systems staff to inspect the laptop and clear your loan.

The library is not responsible for any computer viruses that may be transferred to or from a users diskette.
The library is not responsible for any files left on any computer or for loss of or damage.

Additional Policies, Terms, and Conditions
  • Laptops must be returned to the Systems Help Desk within 4 hours of check-out or one hour before the systems office closes, whichever occurs first.
  • Only one laptop may be checked out per person.
  • For extended laptop checkout or group checkouts, or group checkouts for laptop use outside of the library, contact the Instructional Media Center at 599-3460.
  • Software loaded on the laptop includes Microsoft Office 2000 Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access and an Internet Browser).

By completing and signing this Loan Agreement, I accept full responsibility for the laptop and accessories I am borrowing.  I understand that FAMU will use every reasonable means of collecting monies to cover the cost of repairing or replacing the laptop and/or accessories if they are damaged, lost, or stolen while checked out in my name.

I understand that the replacement cost for this laptop computer will be no less than $2500.

I agree that I have received a laptop as described in the section above. All parts are present and functioning.

I agree to follow all guidelines set forth in the Laptop Loan Policies.
