The Florida A&M College of Education History

 The College of Education can be considered the cornerstone college of Florida A&M University; it was the first and only college, department or major within the university at its inception in 1887.

The College of Education (COE) currently retains its position of acclaim associated with superior accomplishment at this university and within the nation. 1890

The Department of Mechanical Arts was created.

1958

Establishment of an undergraduate chapter of Phi Beta Lambda Business Organization.

1975

Herbert C. Beacham is named the Chair of Industrial, Vocational and Technical Education; Junious D. Brown is named Chair of Business, Adult and Agriculture Education.

1977

An undergraduate chapter of Pi Omega Pi National Business Teacher Education Honor Society was established (initiated by Dr. Jerrlyne Jackson)

1978

Herbert C. Beacham continues as the Chair of Industrial, Vocational and Technical Education; Junious D. Brown is named Acting Director of Vocational Technical and Adult Education. Freeman R. Irvine, Jr. is named Chair of Industrial Education.

1981

Herbert C. Beacham is named acting director of Adult, Vocational and Technical Education.

1982

Herbert C. Beacham is named Director of Industrial Arts and Vocational Education.

1988

Freeman R. Irvine, Jr. is named Chair of Industrial and Vocational Education.

1990

Mary Young is named Chair of Industrial Arts and Vocational Education.

1993

Jerrlyne Jackson is named Chair of Industrial Arts and Vocational Education.

1996

Jerrlyne Jackson is named Chair Vocational Education.

1999

Mary Young is named Chair of Industrial Arts and Vocational Education.
