HBGI Program Accomplishments 07-08

"There was 100% passing rate for students who took the licensing exam for Pharmacy; 145 students received PharmD degrees of which 115 were African-Americans in the spring 2008.  Two (2) African-American females received their Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences. Title III funding was instrumental in giving 27 graduate research and teaching assistantships, and awarding grant and aid scholarships_32 for the fall 2007 and 49 for spring 2008.  Each term at least 3 Ph.D. students in physics received Title III grant and aid scholarships.

"State of the art equipment was purchased for two (2) Physics laboratories.  Top researchers in their fields provided seminars to students and the general public in order to share information about cutting-edge research.

"Chemistry has employed 20 graduate teaching assistants; four (4) students have graduated with a Masters of Science in Chemistry this funding year.  Two laboratories have received state of the art research equipment.

"The Environmental Science Institute is well on its way to incorporating a new course, which was offered for the second time, entitled Theory and Application of Molecular Biotechnology into the curriculum.  Fifteen special lectures were held and a total of 294 participants attended to gain information from top scholars in the field of environmental sciences. Financial assistance was given to at least six (6) Ph.D. and three (3) advanced Master’s students.  One (1) student graduated with a Ph.D. in the spring 2008.
 
"Title III funding at Florida A&M University (FAMU) had a significant impact in the areas of technology and equipment enhancement, matriculation, and graduation.

"The Architecture activity upgraded the teaching instructional resource lab and increased the GIS capabilities for the program.

"The Law School activity conducted writing seminars for 585 students and bar preparation sessions for 403 participants. 97% of upper-class students supported by Title III funds matriculated and remained in the FAMU Law School.

"The Minority Graduate Engineering activity helped a student earn a PHD.

"The Academic Enhancement of Graduate Health Management Education and Biological Sciences continue to provide Fellowships and assistantships to 19 students completing the 07-08 stated goals. Biological Sciences purchased scientific equipment for Molecular and Cellular biology, Organizational Ecological Biology and the Anatomy labs to enhance graduate research and learning outcomes.

"The Health Management activity conducted four lecture series for its graduate students to bridge the gap between theory and health administration with two additional series in case application.
