BSW Student Advisement

Social Work faculty recognize the importance of effective student advisement in facilitating students successful matriculation through the BSW program. Our Student Advisement system is a very essential component of the BSW Program's success in graduating professional social workers. The advisee/advisor relationship includes both mentoring and modeling behaviors that assist student in becoming social work professionals.   We require all social work students to see their advisor at least once a semester. In addition, advisement by faculty is available prior to program admission for students desiring information and exploring their interest and aptitude for professional social work study. The Program Director interviews and corresponds with all program applicants.

Advisors meet regularly with advisees to identify student strengths and weaknesses, and to discuss many aspects of the social work curriculum. Maintaining regular contact with advisees provides continuous opportunity for joint evaluation of the student's committment to social work values, and for discussion of career opportunities and graduate school options. Frequent contacts permit advisors to anticipate problems that students may have with the social work curriculum and thus reduce the severity or even the occurrence of such problems. Students are assisgned a faculty advisor when they enter the program. Advisor/advisee changes may be made at the request of the student, faculty, or at the discretion of the Program Director in consultation with the Department Chairperson.
