All BSW students must complete the equivalent of a full-time semester-long field experience, similar to an internship, and an Integrative Seminar in their last semester in order to graduate with a BSW degree. Students can complete the Field Experience hours in the form of a block placement or a part-time placement. Block placements consist of a full-time work week over a period of one semester.

After completion of the Field prerequisites (Liberal Arts courses, Foreign Language, the professional Social Work course sequence, and the approved Pre-Field Application Check List Form), students are eligible to apply for field placement as the final phase of the curriculum. All students must pay for and undergo a nationwide criminal background check. If a student has ever been charged with or arrested for a crime, they must notify the department immediately. In some cases the student's criminal background history may prohibit an agency from allowing the student to complete their Field Placement at that agency or otherwise limit the student's options. The background check report must be submitted to the Field Coordinator.

Students must also purchase professional liability insurance prior to beginning their Field Experience and Integrative Seminar. The professional liability insurance can be purchased at a discounted group rate only by members of specific professional Social Work organizations. Students are encouraged to join one of the professional Social Work organizations early in their tenure in the BSW program.
