HBCU RISE Students Meet J. Craig Venter at Annual NSF JAM Meeting | | Environmental Sciences Institute graduate students, Tamar Dickerson (far right in photo) and Sherilyn Morgan (left) meet with world renown scientists, entrepreneur and innovator, Dr. J. Craig Venter founder of The Institute for Genomic Research and the J. Craig Venter Institute for Genomics in LaJolla, California. The students had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Venter following his address at the annual National Science Foundation Human Resource Development Joint Annual Meeting held on June 8-11 in Washington, D.C. The meeting brings together all of the programs in the HRD Division at NSF. Dr. Venter's appearance at the meeting and the opportunity for Tamar and Sherilyn to meet him was ironic as his institute is included as a partner in a HBCU RISE proposal currently in review that would have students and faculty from FAMU’s ESI and other science departments to attend workshops at the institute in California to learn more about the cutting edge research and technologies for analyzing and manipulating genomes. Both students are currently supported by the HBCU RISE grant at FAMU with Dr. Henry Neal Williams as the P.I. Ms. Dickerson is a Ph.D. candidate. Ms. Morgan is pursuing the M.S. degree in Environmental Science. |
