WHY FAMU SOE

The natural resources of the Apalachicola River and the Apalachicola Bay are vital to the State of Florida’s economy. Our proximity to these natural resources gives the School of the Environment a vital location to conduct ecosystem research that continues our legacy of opening doors to environmental careers through our undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Environmental Science and Environmental Studies. We offer BS and BA degrees in Environmental Studies; BS, MS, and PH.D degrees in Environmental Science in the following areas of concentration: Environmental Policy and Risk Management; Aquatic and Terrestrial Ecology; Bimolecular Sciences; and Environmental Chemistry.

Our years of active research engagements through funds from the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), has kept us in the forefront of training new generation of students   in ecosystem characterization, ecological processes, forecasting and modeling, and human dimensions.

This legacy is continuing with our leading role in the EnergyWaterFoodNexus, a new science enterprise, to facilitate the convergence and collaboration of industry innovators focused on generating sustainable solutions in the energy, water, and food sectors to grow and meet the needs of the global economy. This global public-private partnership seeks to generate practical solutions through research and commercialization of technologies that advance renewable energy, increase access to safe drinking water, and promote natural resource conservation.

Most importantly, the small faculty to student ratio gives students increased access to our core lab and mentoring opportunities for a rewarding undergraduate and graduate experience.
