The mission of the Computer and Information Sciences Department at FAMU is to develop strong, technically equipped graduates with the following skills and abilities:

  1. Students will be able to demonstrate the acquisition of critical thinking skills by:
  • Exhibiting expertise in the main content knowledge of computer science
  • Designing and implementing computerized solutions by applying fundamental programming skills and knowledge of data structures and algorithms
  • Demonstrate proficiency in software lifecycle principles, using a range of problem-solving, programming, and software engineering techniques
  1. Student will be able to demonstrate strong technical communications skills by:
  • Effectively articulating a technical strategy, both orally and in writing
  • Effectively creating and delivering effective oral and poster presentations
  1. Students will be able to demonstrate that they have met the requirements necessary for application and acceptance into advanced and graduate degree programs for:
  • Effectively completing courses that serve as preparation for a graduate degree in computer scienceEffectively obtaining acceptable scores on Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) tests
  1. Students will be able to demonstrate a knowledge of the social and ethical issues of the computer science field by:
  • Recognizing ethical issues in computing contextsArticulate the responsibilities of a computing professional
  1. Students will be able to demonstrate a strong knowledge of the functional components of computer systems by:
  • Effectively completing courses that serve to strengthen the knowledge of computer hardware components and structures
  • Effectively being able to apply such knowledge to the use of new technologies
  1. Students will be able to demonstrate strong knowledge of the theoretical and mathematical basis of computer science by:
  • Effectively completing courses that serve to strengthen the knowledge of computer hardware components and structures
  • Effectively being able to apply such knowledge to use new theoretical frameworks in computer science
