BSHCM Academic Learning Compact
The Division of Health Care Management has identified five outcomes that are desired in each student who graduates from the program. Students majoring in health care management should become familiar with these outcomes and methods that will be used to assess them.

1. Communication Skills: Graduates of the HCM Program will demonstrate proficiency in oral and written communications.

Direct Measure
Students will receive a mean score of 70% in oral and written communications projects in all core * HCM courses. *HSA 3110; HSA 3170; HSA 3141; HSA 3180; HSC 3930; HSC 3931.

Indirect Measure
Oral and written communication skills of the interns and graduates will be evaluated using a survey of preceptors and employers. Survey results will indicate a communication skill level of at least a 3.5 on a 5- point Likert scale.

2. Critical Thinking Skills: Graduates will demonstrate the ability to use critical and strategic thinking in analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating various types of cases, reports and research publications.
Direct Measure
80% of students will earn a mean score of 70% or better on coursework and assigned learning activities. Applicable courses HSA 3225; HSA 3170; HSA 3141; HSA 3180; HSA 4700; HSC 4634.

Indirect Measure
Critical thinking skills of the interns and graduates will be evaluated using a survey of preceptors and employers. Survey results will indicate a critical thinking skill performance level of at least 3 on a 5-point Likert scale.

3. Specific Content Knowledge: Graduates will demonstrate an understanding of knowledge, concepts and skills necessary to obtain entry-level positions in the health care industry.

Direct Measure
Eighty percent of students will earn a mean score of 70% or better on coursework and assigned learning activities. Applicable courses: HSA 3110; HSA 3170; HSA 3141; HSA 3180; HSC 3930; HSC 3931; HSA 4700.

Indirect Measure
Surveyed preceptors will indicate that 80% of students have content knowledge appropriate for the internship experience.

4. Advancement to Graduate or Professional Programs: Graduates will pursue opportunities for graduate and/or professional education.

Direct Measure
At least 5% of graduating students will secure admission into graduate or professional programs.

Indirect Measure
Five percent of alumni surveyed will indicate matriculation in or completion of a graduate or professional program.

5. Technology Literacy: Graduates will demonstrate proficiency in the use of presentation, spreadsheet programs and current word processing technologies.

Direct Measure
Seventy percent of students will earn a mean score of 70% or better on material that incorporates case studies, capstone projects, examinations, tests and assignments utilizing Excel, PowerPoint, MS Word, and other software programs. Applicable courses HSA 3225; HSA 3170; HSA 3141; HSA 3180; HSA 4700.

Indirect Measure
Seventy percent of surveyed preceptors will indicate that 70% of students have demonstrated technological literacy appropriate to the internship experience based on preceptors’ evaluations of projects applying Excel, PowerPoint, MS Word, and other software programs.
