Division of Journalism Philosophy The Florida A&M University (FAMU) Division of Journalism was founded in 1974. The division is dedicated toward preparing men and women for careers in journalism and related fields. Its faculty has appropriate academic preparation and relevant professional backgrounds. The Division offers instruction in newspaper journalism, broadcast journalism, magazine production and public relations. Underlying all instruction in the Division is emphasis on the proper use of the written word. Writing is emphasized from the first course a student takes in the Division until graduation. The Journalism faculty believes that effective communication starts with the written word and that graduates who write well have an advantage over others in the job market. However, the FAMU Division of Journalism is much more than just "journalism" in the traditional sense. Classroom instruction concentrates on a number of media outlets - radio, television, cable, newspapers, magazines, brochures, newsletters, and on-line, to name a few. Thus, in a real sense, FAMU journalism students have a unique opportunity to become familiar with most communication outlets. FAMU instruction couples theories of communication with practical, everyday aspects of how to work successfully in communication.
