Essential Theatre is proud to present the “The Color Purple.” The musical adaptation of Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and the popular 1985 Steven Spielberg film comes to life on the Edmonds Stage at the Charles Winter Wood Theatre March 29 through 31 and April 5 through 7. Adapted for the stage by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Marsha Norman and Grammy Award-winning composers/lyricists Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, this inspiring family saga tells the unforgettable story of a woman named Celie, who, through love, finds the strength to triumph over adversity and discover her unique voice in the world.
Under the direction of Luther D. Wells, “The Color Purple” features the talent of several FAMU theatre and music alumni and current students as well as students from area schools. The creative team includes former FAMU choral director Charlie Toomer as the musical director and guest choreographer James Harkness who lends his experience as a former member of the Broadway production.
Opening night ticket holders of “The Color Purple” should dress to impress as individuals are invited to participate in the first red carpet affair for the Essential Theatre. The paparazzi studded event complete with red runner, flashing cameras, step and repeat and roaming reporters will begin at 7 p.m.
“This show has generated a lot of community interest,” said Valencia E. Matthews, director of theatre and dean of the College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities. “So we would like to give our audience an opportunity to have some fun and to experience a simulation of a red-carpet premiere.”
Performances for the two-week engagement are Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for senior citizens, $8 for children and non-FAMU students and FAMU students are admitted free with valid I.D. Tickets are on sale weekdays from March 25 to March 28 and April 1 through April 5 from noon to 5:30 p.m. and again one hour prior to each curtain. Tickets must be purchased in person. The box office is located in the lobby of Tucker Hall. Tickets may be purchased with cash and checks only.
