TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida A&M University (FAMU) Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) will host the 19t.h annual “Haunted Library” at the Dr. B.L. Perry Branch Library on Saturday, October 25, at noon in effort to increase literacy and readership among Tallahassee youth. The event is free and open to the public.
The Haunted Library initiative began in 1991 to encourage K-12 graders in Leon County to read more and to demonstrate through creative reading activities that education can be fun.
“The Haunted Library is a great event not only for children, but for parents,” said Amber Amos, chapter president of FAMU PRSSA. “It is a fun, educational, and safe way to kick off the fall season. I am very excited about this year’s haunted library and can’t wait to see all of the children in their costumes.”
PRSSA members will transform one of the library’s meeting rooms into a haunted house, featuring Halloween sound effects and decorations. In addition, the members dress-up in Halloween costumes to read books in character and also engage in face painting with the youth. The children enjoy food and beverages from local vendors.
As one of the primary annual activities for FAMU PRSSA, its members feel a special connection with the Haunted Library event because it gives them an opportunity to give back to the community.
Erika Kennedy, former PRSSA president said, “Being a member of PRSSA and a future public relations practitioner, my greatest contribution was giving back to the community. The Haunted Library is a very special event and I really enjoyed helping the children.”
