FAMU’s Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships will Observe Constitution Day
Florida A&M University Office of Financial Aid will observe Constitution Day on September 17 in memory of Louise Leigh, the founder of Constitution Day.
As outreach director for the California Bicentennial Commission in 1987, Leigh realized how little most Americans knew about the Constitution. "It is the most unique government document in the history of mankind,” said Leigh. “It guarantees our freedom. It is unique in that the government doesn't tell us what to do, we tell the government what to do."
In 1997, Leigh founded Constitution Day Inc., which is an American federal holiday that recognizes the ratification of the United States Constitution (September 17, 1787). The law establishing the holiday was created in 2004 with the passage of the Omnibus spending bill of 2004. The act mandates that all publicly funded educational institutions provide educational programming on the history of the American Constitution as part of the Constitution Day holiday.
