FAMU Office of Communications Appoints New Director of Media Relations
July 3, 2013

Thomas

Florida A&M University’s (FAMU) Communication’s Office has appointed Alonda Thomas as the new director of media relations. Thomas brings a decade of experience in media strategy and entertainment public relations to the position.

“She has strong leadership and communications skills and will be an asset to the office and to the university, said Sharon Saunders, executive assistant to the president for communications and the university’s chief communications officer.

Thomas previously served as senior publicist at The FrontPage Firm where she led various publicity campaigns for television shows, including “Welcome to Sweetie Pies” on the Oprah Winfrey Network and “LisaRaye: The Real McCoy” on TV One. Thomas worked closely with the firm’s celebrity client roster to secure media coverage for executives such as political analyst Roland Martin, journalist Kevin Frazier and film producer T.D. Jakes.

“It is an honor to come back home to FAMU and serve at the institution that prepared me for my career,” Thomas said. “I look forward to working with my colleagues on campus and within the media to promote the wealth of stories taking place each day.”

Thomas began her career as communications specialist at North Carolina Central University where she was responsible for developing news releases and founded the university’s first student recruitment performance ensemble, The NCCU Spirit. She later served on the corporate communications team at Edelman in Atlanta where she supported the B2B, real estate and sustainability practices.

In 2008, Thomas moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in entertainment PR. Her leap of faith landed her a position at the prestigious Creative Artists Agency where she coordinated speaking engagements for the A-list roster of actors and producers, including Sidney Poitier, Anthony Zuiker, Geena Davis and John Lithgow. Thomas then accepted a position as media and publicity coordinator for Sander/Moses Productions where she supported the final season of the hit CBS show, “Ghost Whisperer.”

Thomas received her baccalaureate degree in public relations from FAMU in 2001 and a master’s degree in integrated marketing communications from Florida State University in 2005, where she was a university fellow. Through the years Thomas has held several positions in the FAMU National Alumni Association; most recently serving as president of the FAMU NAA Southern California Chapter.

The previous director of media relations, Pamela Tolson, accepted a position at Saint Augustine’s University.
