Orlando, Fla.
– Florida A&M University (FAMU) College of Law first-year student Michael Harrison, Jr. was awarded the Holland & Knight Scholarship, and will participate in the firm’s prestigious Summer Associate Program.  The exclusive program provides an opportunity for a select group of law students from across the nation to gain real-world law firm experience, where associates work with experienced lawyers on complex matters for their clients.  Holland & Knight instituted its scholarship program in partnership with FAMU in 2008.

“We are thrilled that the Holland & Knight law firm has selected one of our students to participate in this tremendous opportunity,” said LeRoy Pernell, Dean of the FAMU College of Law.  “Mr. Harrison is among our brightest first-year students, and a fine representation of the talent potential attending our law school.”

“Our partnership with FAMU has been successful for everyone involved,” said Holland &Knight partner Glenn Adams.  “Mr. Harrison is an impressive student with a lot to offer the legal profession, and we are delighted that he will be joining us this summer.”

Harrison was formally presented with the Summer Associate opportunity and scholarship during a meeting at the College of Law with Dean Pernell and Orlando-based Holland & Knight attorneys Glenn Adams and Albert Tellechea, and Human Resource Manager Kathy Molhem in April.  The scholarship will provide full tuition during Harrison’s second year of law school, with an opportunity for renewal during his third and final year of legal studies.  The Holland & Knight Scholarship annual recipient will also be recognized during the Annual College of Law Donors Luncheon in Fall 2012, during which several other endowed and major scholarships are announced.

Holland & Knight is a global law firm with more than 1,000 lawyers in 17 U.S. offices, as well as Abu Dhabi, Beijing and Mexico City.  The law firm is among the world's largest, providing representation in litigation, business, real estate and governmental law.  The Summer Associate's Program allows law students to gain more insight into the firm, and experience a variety of practices to help associates determine their best career path.

In addition to working with experienced lawyers, the associates will also attend client meetings, depositions, hearings, trials, closings, and other events; build relationships with Holland & Knight attorneys through the mentoring program and periodic practice group presentations; and improve substantive and practice legal skills through customized training programs.

The FAMU College of Law was founded in 1949 on the main campus in Tallahassee.  After graduating 57 lawyers, the law school was closed by the state of Florida in 1968. The Florida Legislature voted to reopen the law school in 2000 and Orlando was selected as the location. The re-established FAMU College of Law opened its doors in 2002 and is now housed in a state-of-the-art facility in downtown Orlando’s Parramore neighborhood.  The FAMU College of Law received full accreditation from the American Bar Association in July 2009, and has consistently been ranked in the top five for Diversity by U.S. News & World Report since 2007 -- achieving the top rank on three occasions.
