– Students majoring in engineering technology (ET) programs at Florida A&M University (FAMU) should have high expectations for upgrading their employability skills at the fourth annual FAMU Alumni Industry Day for Engineering Sciences and Technology. This professional development event is scheduled for March 30 through April 1, 2011, in the Benjamin Banneker Complex, Building B, Room 102, located at 1339 Wahnish Way, Tallahassee.
Yves Anglade, director for the Division of Engineering Sciences and Technology at FAMU, is encouraging all ET students to attend.
“This year, we plan to take our Industry Day to a higher level through offering more opportunities for our students to network and get assistance in mapping out their future career plans,” said Anglade. “Our sponsors such as Siemens, Balfour Beatty Construction and JCPenney Corporation add great dimension to the Industry Day by providing additional benefits for students.”
FAMU graduates from the diverse programs in engineering sciences and technology will return to campus and share their expertise as presenters in workshops on topics such as “Under Water Construction,” “Preconstruction,” “Scaffold Erection and Safety” and “Team Building.”
This year, some of the new activities include an open house and job fair tailored for students and graduates in the following fields: construction, civil and electronic engineering technology and biological agricultural systems engineering. Also, a field trip is scheduled for students to make a site visit to an interior renovation project at a JCPenney store in Albany, Ga.
For the second year, the student competition will be a highlight where students participate in a mock bid presentation contest to become the winners of the “Builder of Choice” team award. Corporate sponsors will support this competition by providing scholarships to the student teams winning 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
Outstanding achievements of students and faculty will be honored at the Awards and Recognition Banquet on Thursday, March 31, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Atrium of the School of Architecture. FAMU alumnus Timothy L. Johnson will be the keynote speaker. Johnson is the permitting services division manager and building official with the City of Orlando.
Anthony Rodgers, a FAMU construction ET graduate, has been very involved from the inception of the event.
“Due to the slow economy, we can assist in providing resources which will further prepare students outside of the normal classroom curriculum by enhancing their knowledge-base from industry professionals,” said Rodgers, who works with Balfour Beatty Construction Company.
Standard registration for alumni is $75 per person. The registration fee for exhibitors is $200. Interested sponsors are solicited at several levels from $500 to $3,000. The activities are free for students who sign up to participate.
