School of Business and Industry Wins Supply Chain Management Student Case Competition

March 3, 2010

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Four Florida A&M University (FAMU) School of Business and Industry (SBI) students won the supply chain management student case competition at the 7th Annual Institute for Supply Management Black Executive Supply Management Summit in San Diego, Calif. The team members include Shannon Kirk, team captain; Rayvin Julien; Audreen Robinson; and Tiffany Williams and coached by Roscoe Hightower, Jr., Ph.D. The team won $5,000 in personal scholarships.

Sponsored by the Institute for Supply Management™ (ISM) and Howard University, the conference brought together a group of black executives within the field of supply chain management with the goal to bridge gaps within the industry. Students had the opportunity to meet with executives, middle managers, and first line managers.

“It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to show our students to the world,” said Hightower.  “They were completely prepared and it showed.  As they were presenting, people in the audience were saying ‘Wow!’ and the judges told me they were ‘Great!’  It was incredible.”

Some of the other participating schools included Clark Atlanta University, Howard University, Tennessee State University and Hampton University.

“Our students continue to demonstrate that they receive an excellent education at Florida A&M University,” said Shawnta Friday-Stroud, dean of FAMU’s SBI.  “SBI students are adept in many functional business areas including supply chain management, it is always a privilege to showcase the business acumen of our students.”

Shannon Kirk, captain of the team, said the team was excited to showcase their talents and skills.

“I was proud to work with a wonderful group of ladies, each bringing their own strengths and unique ideas to the team,” said Shannon Kirk.  “I was also glad to have a supportive dean who helped the dream come to fruition at the last minute for funding the trip to San Diego and providing us with a powerful coach, Dr. Roscoe Hightower, his inspiration was key to our success.”

Team member Rayvin Julien expressed that the team was proud to represent SBI and FAMU.

“We were very excited,” said Julien.  “We were confident we had won due to our preparation and leadership.  Dr. Hightower made us feel that we had won the competition before we got there.”

According to Friday-Stroud, SBI is looking forward to participating in the 8th Annual Institute for Supply Management Black Executive Supply Management Summit in 2011.  The team has already determined the team’s name, STAR Consulting.  Their motto is “All of you are good...but which one of you will be G.R.E.A.T.?”

“They informed me that STAR stands for Shannon, Tiffany, Audreen and Rayvin, who all are great!,” said Friday-Stroud.
