TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – U.S. Congressman Allen Boyd (D-North Florida) announced that Florida A&M University (FAMU) will receive a total of $1,222,968 in federal stimulus funds to expand the training of healthcare professionals at FAMU.
“We are most appreciative of Congressman Boyd’s relentless support for Florida A&M University,” said FAMU President James H. Ammons. “This funding will enable us to train our students in the Schools of Nursing and Allied Health to address some of the critical health needs in this region and state as well as nationally.”
FAMU will receive $1,194,759 in scholarships specifically for disadvantaged students. This program will fund training programs, which will provide scholarships to full-time health professions students. Priority will be given to those with financial needs.
Additionally, FAMU will receive $28,209 for public health traineeships. These traineeships will fund the school of public health, which will pay tuition, fees, and stipends for students in biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health, toxicology, nutrition, or maternal and child health.
“This federal funding is great news for FAMU and North Florida,” said Congressman Boyd. “Health and education are our nation’s greatest capital assets, and this funding will help us to continue to provide quality healthcare and education for the area’s residents. There is no doubt that many students and families in North Florida will benefit from these stimulus dollars.”
These funds have been made available under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. This Act was passed with Congressman Boyd’s support and signed into law earlier this year.
