Technology Fee Frequently Asked Questions What is the Technology Fee (TF)? The Technology Fee is a university fee assessed on base tuition for undergraduate and graduate students on all Florida A&M University Campuses. Return to Top How much is the TF? The TF will be 5% of the base tuition per credit hour. Return to Top Why are students being charged the TF? The TF approved by Florida's Legislature under Florida Statute 1009.24. This paragraph states " (s) a technology fee of up to 5 percent the tuition per credit hour, beginning with the fall term of 2009-2010 academic years. The revenue from this fee shall be used to enhance instructional technology resources for students and faculty. The technology fee shall not be included in any award under the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program. "Beginning on May 4, 2009 the TF was approved by the Florida A&M University Board of Trustees effective the fall term of the 2009 - 2010 academic year. Return to Top Will my financial aid cover this fee? The TF will not be covered by some forms of Financial Aid, including Bright Futures Scholarship Awards. However, students should check their specific Financial Aid packages to verify what expenses are covered for them. Return to Top How will the Fee be used? The TF's primary objective is to provide funding to improve the overall technological infrastructure for students in classroom and distance learning settings, research, and teaching. Additionally, the TF ojectives are to support computer and telecommunication services including, but not limited to: student computer labs, software, technology support services, and server facilities. Return to Top Will each campus get to spend their proportion of the fees? Accepted projects will benefit the student body and campus community as a whole. All accepted projects will be reviewed by the President or Provost for final approval. Accepted projects will be accepted based on need and how well that need is met. Return to Top How will this work? The TF funds will be collected with tuition and other fees each semester. Money generated from the TF will be managed by the Enterprise Information Technology (EIT) Division. The fees will be maintained in a separate account to provide internal control for tracking and reporting. The tracking of this account will be used to report back to the FAMU Board of Trustees and the State of Florida. The TFC will manage and oversee the implementation of funds and provide make recommendations fee changes within the rules set by TF regulations. Return to Top How will FAMU determine how to use the funds? The Technology Fee funds will be prioritized and approved if the project proposal provides technology that is directly used to enhance the student's overall academic learning environment through improvements in technology resources. Funding disbursement is recommended by the TFC and approved by the President or Provost. Return to Top How do proposals get submitted? All project proposals will be due at a specified date at the beginning of every semester- fall and spring. Project proposals are submitted and received by TFC for evaluation. Proposals will be reviewed for proposal completion and project need. Once the TFC completes its evaluation of proposals, the proposal will be reviewed by the President or Provost. Return to Top Who can submit a proposal? The Internal and External University community including departments, college or schools, students, and groups can submit a proposal. Return to Top Can I receive assistance in preparing a proposal? TFC's responsibility is to review project proposals and make recomendations to the President and Provost. The committee meets at least two to three times per semester. Return to Top What is the project proposals criteria? The project proposals criteria is outined under the Guiding Principles and Procedures page. Return to Top What happens if TFC does not spend all of the funds? The funds will rolled forward on an on-going basis from year to year if the approved projects do not exhaust all funds collected. Return to Top Why do you plan for a reserve? Proposals will be submitted each semester and projects will be approved based on need. The TFC anticipates that instances may occur where an improvement opportunity may be identified after projects have been approved for the semester. As a result, a planned reserve will allow the TFC the ability to respond to new opportunities in a time-sensitive manner without waiting until the next approval cycle.
