Criminal Investigations Section

The Criminal Investigations Section (CIS) is responsible for the investigation of homicide, sexual battery, larceny, auto theft, hazing, burglary, and fraud. Investigators work in conjunction with local municipalities, state and federal law enforcement agencies, such as Tallahassee Police Department, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Federal Bureau of Investigations and Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Investigators are available on a 24-hour basis to assist patrol units by responding to crimes of a serious nature (i.e., aggravated battery, sexual battery, and death investigations). CIS also submits evidence to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Crime Lab for evaluation and analysis.

Reports taken by the patrol officers are reviewed and evaluated daily by CIS. Based on the evaluation, reports are assigned to an investigator for follow-up. Criminal charges are filed by the State Attorney's Office based on sufficient probable cause. In addition, information on criminal activity is sent to the University's Judicial Affairs Office for appropriate action.
