The Department offers several programs aimed at the prevention of criminal activity.
Remember that crimes occur only when criminals are given the opportunity. It is up to all of us to take that opportunity away. To help you do this, we have provided tips on preventive steps you can take before you are victimized. Also listed are steps to assist in the event you become a victim.
Operation I.D: is a tremendous tool for the university community. This free program involves the engraving of an owner supplied identification number on property which is of high value or easily stolen.
Operation Bookstamp: is a companion program to Operation I.D. Crime Prevention representatives and FAMU Bookstore personnel will stamp identifying information on the front cover of books after the last drop date for classes. This program will help the FAMU Bookstore and the FAMU Police Department in the tracking and resale of books. I.D. matching the identifying data must be presented before the book can be resold to the bookstore.
S.A.F.E. (Students Available For Escort) Team: During nighttime hours, a student-run escort service is available upon request to aid in safe movement between various locations on campus (i.e., classroom buildings, laboratories, libraries, parking lots, and residence halls). The SAFE Team members are students, who are responsible for all operational aspects of providing escort services -- from recruiting other students to become a part of the team to managing those teams. Oversight for the S.A.F.E. Team is the responsibility of the Crime Prevention Unit.
Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D): This nine-hour self-defense course is offered to female students and staff. R.A.D. is a proactive abduction and rape prevention program that focus on the educating and empowering women. This is a hands-on intense presentation.
Self Defense Awareness and Familiarization: This two hour self-defense awareness program is a pre-basis familiarization with physical training methods. This program is an opportunity for students and staff to receive information that may reduce the risk of exposure to violence and familiarize themselves to the possibility of future physical skills training.
New Student Orientation: New student orientation classes are available to assist the new FAMU students in their transition from home to campus life. During orientation the new students are given resource material to increase their knowledge of crime prevention measures.
Student Organization: All student organizations are briefed on the anti-hazing policy as well as safety precautions for organizations.
Officer Friendly: Officer Friendly presentations are available for the New Beginnings Preschool, Lucy Moten Elementary and FAMU Developmental Research School.
College Crime Watch: This national program was developed to mobilize and equip student-led movement in colleges and universities in partnership with public and private institutions to create a safer environment free of crime, violence, and illicit drugs in order to foster good citizenship throughout the world.
