What is Mobile Giving?
Mobile Giving is a way by which FAMU can raise money through text message donations. Supporters of FAMU send a text message to a specific keyword & short code and a nontaxable $5 donation is applied to their cell phone bill. The funds are collected from each carrier by the Mobile Giving Foundation (MGF) and then sent to FAMU in approximately 90 days. Depending on the your wireless carrier and service plan you may be charged a nominal fee by your wireless carrier for sending and receiving text messages (approximately $0.05-$0.15 cents per text). Unlimited or bulk text messaging plans are becoming very popular with mobile subscribers and are heavily promoted by most major wireless carriers. If you have an unlimited text messaging plan, there would be no additional text messaging charges from the wireless carrier.

Q. Is the donation complete once I text [KEYWORD] to the short code?
A. No. After you text the word [KEYWORD] to the short code, you will receive a text message back asking you to confirm your $5 donation. To complete the donation, reply to this message with the word YES. You will then receive a message back confirming that $5 has been added to your next monthly mobile phone bill for that organization.
Q. Does it work on any cell phone and/or carrier?
A. Almost anyone in the U.S. can text in a mobile donation. Mobile Giving is supported by the following carriers: AT&T, Nextel, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon Wireless.
Q. Can I donate more than $5?
A.Yes. While each text transaction will only make a $5 donation, you may text up to 5 times for a total donation of $25 to a specific campaign. Most carriers allow up to a $100 donated to a short code.
Q. Do I need an area code in front of short code?
A. No, just simply enter the short code instead of a 10 digit phone number.
Q. How do I get a receipt for my donation?
A. Follow this URL: http://mobilegiving.org/SMS_Donations/, type in your mobile number, and you will be able to view and print a receipt for all mobile donations made from that phone number.
