(Scholarship Application)

While every effort is made to assure accurate and up-to-date information, Florida A&M University and its Board of Trustees do not assume responsibility for any misrepresentation which might arise through error in the preparation of this scholarship listing or through failure to give notice of changes in its requirements, policies, tuition and fees, course offerings, and other matters affecting students or applicants.

All scholarship applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible after January 1st for the next academic school year but not later than March 1st. FAMU code is 001480. You may apply on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. No awards will be issued to students who do not complete an annual FAFSA application.

The scholarships listed here are those scholarships with available funding and those whose student selection is solely determined by the Foundation’s scholarship committee. Students are strongly encouraged to check with their major department for additional scholarship opportunities.

These scholarships are for the 2011-12 (fall and spring) academic year. Applications must be postmarked by September 23, 2011. All scholarship recipients will be notified of their selection by October 7, 2011. For more information, please contact Mr. Nick Dulcio at (850) 599-3860.

Application Procedure:

1. Complete the Foundation Scholarship Application with requested supporting documentation. Please note that a scholarship application must be completed for each scholarship you wish to apply for. (ONLY TYPED APPLICATIONS WILL BE CONSIDERED)

2. Forward the scholarship application and supporting materials in a sealed envelope addressed to the attention of Nick Dulcio to 203 Lee Hall in the designated scholarship application area.

3. Only completed applications will be considered for scholarship funding.



Burger King Corporation Endowed Scholarship

Criteria
This endowment was established to provide scholarships for outstanding students in the fields of Business, Economics and Education.

Selection of scholars will be based on applicant's academic record, community activities, demonstrated leadership and financial need. Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA and may reapply each year.

Award Amount
Varies ($1,000-2,000 per academic year)


John Due and Patricia Stephens Due
Freedom Endowed Scholarship


History
This endowed scholarship is named for FAMU alumni John Due and Patricia Stephens Due, who have been stalwart crusaders for civil rights and equality for more than four decades.

Criteria
The Freedom Scholarship shall be awarded annually to one student. This scholarship is for tuition, room, board, books, and fees. The Freedom Scholarship is designated for an undergraduate student with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Applicants must be majoring in history, sociology, journalism, black studies or political science - or be able to demonstrate outstanding volunteer work in civil rights or community or community improvement during their high school and/or college years.

Recipient(s) will be required to provide a photograph and written statement to the Foundation. In this statement, the recipient(s) will write how they plan to use the legacy of the civil rights movement to do their part to make this a better nation. These materials will be used for promotional purposes upon acceptance of this scholarship.

Recipient(s) must complete and sign a Scholarship Acceptance Form. All scholarship winners will receive a paperback copy of Freedom in the Family: A Mother-Daughter Memoir of the Fight for Civil Rights, by Tananarive Due and Patricia Stephens Due. This scholarship may be renewed; however, current recipients must re-apply each year and meet eligibility criteria.

$1,000 per academic year


Marva Bradley Harris Scholarship

History

This endowed scholarship is named for FAMU alumni Marva Bradley Harris.  A native of Lake City, Florida, Mrs. Harris spent her professional career at Procter & Gamble where she was a highly regarded manager and won the admiration, respect and love of her co-workers and senior management.  She played a vital role in the Product Development and R&D units and was awarded a patent in Coffee Roasting Technology and chemistry resulting in a commercially successful new high-yields coffee under the Folgers name. 

The establishment of the Marva Bradley Harris Endowed Scholarship remembers her legacy, provides an opportunity to sustain life, and plants a seed to revel in the joy that comes with giving.

Criteria
The scholarship supports an aspiring chemistry major.  Recipient must be a high school graduate with a 3.0 GPA in courses creditable toward admission to FAMU; a 900 SAT score or comparable ACT score.

Recipient must submit two (2) letters of recommendation from non-related science teachers and prepare a written essay of 250 words outlining career objectives.  Eligible candidates shall submit an application, letters of recommendation and essay to the Dean of the College of Science and Technology.

The scholarship is renewable as long as the recipient maintains satisfactory academic progress.

Award Amount
$2,500 per academic year


George Duval Holliday Scholarship

History
Miss Ruby Diamond, a Tallahassee Philanthropist established the scholarship fund in the name of Mr. Holliday in January 1976. Mr. Holliday was a cook for some 30 years at Tallahassee’s Floridian Hotel where Miss Diamond resided. Mrs. Lucile Baldwin Holliday (wife) holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from FAMU, they had three sons. He was a native of Leon County and graduated from Tallahassee’s Old Lincoln High School where he was an outstanding athlete in basketball and football. He was a member of St. Mary’s Primitive Baptist Church.

Criteria
The scholarship fund is to be used to assist worthy black students preferably those from Leon County, who could not otherwise attend the University. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 and must provide two (2) letters of reference, one of which must be from a current professor.

Tom Joyner Scholarship


Criteria
Established to provide a need-based scholarship for full-time undergraduate students. Recipients must be a U.S. Citizen; student must have completed 10 hours of community/volunteer services per semester and must supply a letter from the volunteer organization verifying community service; open to both in-state and out-of-state students; and student must provide a statement of purpose/need for scholarship. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.

Varies ($1,000-$2,000 per academic year)


Wilbert E., Helen and Lillian King Charitable Scholarship

History
Mr. Wilbert E. King, who passed away in 2004, established this charitable scholarship along with his wife Helen in memory of his sister Lillian to assist deserving students from the Miami-Dade County, Florida region.

Criteria
This scholarship is to provide need-based support for undergraduate or graduate students who live in the South Miami-Dade County, Florida area. This area is defined by the following boundaries: Kendall Drive south to the Miami-Dade County Florida line with preference for individuals living in the Richmond Heights, Perrine and Goulds area.

If an entering freshman, must have applied to FAMU and cleared for enrollment. (Minimum high school GPA of 3.0)

If currently enrolled, must be making reasonable progress toward graduation and in good standing with the University (Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5).

Students must have completed at least 10 hours of community/volunteer services during the current year and must supply a letter from the volunteer organization verifying community service.

Award Amount
$2,000 per academic year


Martha J. and LaSalle D. Leffall, Sr. Endowed Scholarship

History
Dr. LaSalle D. Leffall, Jr., the Charles R. Drew Professor of surgery, Howard University in 1997 established this scholarship in honor of his parents, Dr. and Mrs. LaSalle D. and Martha J. Leffall, Sr.

Criteria
This is a need-based scholarship to assist full time, degree-seeking, undergraduate students. Recipients must be a U. S. Citizen, a Florida resident preferably from Gadsden County.

If an entering freshman, must have applied to FAMU and cleared for enrollment. (Minimum high school GPA of 2.5)

If currently enrolled, must be making reasonable progress toward graduation and in good standing with the University (Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5).

Students must have completed at least 10 hours of community/volunteer services during the current year and must supply a letter from the volunteer organization verifying community service.

Award Amount
Varies (3.0 and above GPA - $1,500 per academic year /
2.5-2.99 GPA - $1,000 per academic year)


Katherine B. Miles Endowed Scholarship


History
This scholarship was established through the generosity of Mrs. Katherine B. Miles, a Florida native who currently resides in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Mrs. Miles established this scholarship to assist deserving students at an institution of higher learning.

Criteria
This scholarship is to support full-time undergraduate students whose major is within the Department of Music and/or a FAMU Marching “100” band member. Student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Award Amount
$2000 per academic year


William "Bill" McGill Endowed Scholarship

History
A Midway native, William A. "Bill" McGill was elected to the Gadsden County Commission in 1991. He maintained his seat until his death in 2004. During his tenure he served as Chairman of the Board for four years. In his earlier career he was associated with an advocacy group known as the Freedom Fighters who's efforts were to get citizens registered to vote and participate in the electoral process. He was a voice for the voiceless and an advocate for the rights of the poor.

He earned an undergraduate degree in vocational agriculture/biology in 1958 from Florida A&M University. His tenure in the Gadsden County School system was long and distinguished. In 2006, the Gadsden County Public Library was named in his honor.

Criteria
The student must be a graduate of a Gadsden County High School with a minimum GPA of 2.5. The student must have a minimum of 10 hours community/volunteer service during the academic year of application.

Student must major in Nursing (pre-nursing until accepted into the program), Education or Business. This scholarship may be renewed; however, current recipients must re-apply each year and meet eligibility criteria.

Award Amount
$500 (Fall Semester Only)


Nationwide Insurance Endowed Scholarship

Criteria
The recipient must have an academic major in insurance, business administration, accounting, economics or other business-related disciplines.

Preference is given candidates who are pursuing insurance or insurance related majors. Students must demonstrate financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid. You must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and show evidence of leadership in a campus or a community role.

George H. & Lula Pendleton Rawls Endowed Scholarship

Criteria
Student(s) should have a need for finances, must have graduated with a "B" average in an academic High School Program, have at least 900 on the SAT test or at least a 19 on the ACT. Student must major in Chemistry, Biology or Pre-Medicine and be a black male or female. Good character, well rounded and must provide two (2) letters of reference, one of which must be from a current professor.

Student must maintain a "B" average and participate in extracurricular activities.

Award Amount
Students will receive $5,000 per academic year ($2,500 each semester)



Bishop A.J. and Connie Richardson Endowed Scholarship

History
Bishop Adam J. Richardson, Jr. is presiding Prelate of the Second Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME). He is a native of Tampa, FL. and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Florida A&M University, where he served as the head drum major for the famed Marching “100” Band.

Mrs. Connie Speights Richardson currently serves as the Second District’s Episcopal Supervisor and is a native of Marianna, FL. Mrs. Richardson is a graduate of Tuskegee Institute (University) where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. The Richardson’s have two adult children, Monique, a practicing attorney and Trey who was awarded two degrees in June 2004. He holds the Master of Music degree in Saxophone Performance and a Master of Music degree in Music Theory.

Criteria
This scholarship is to support the FAMU Marching “100” band members. Students must be majoring in Nursing or Allied Health, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Students must demonstrate financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid.

Award Amount
$1,000 per academic year


Alvin Florey Sloan Endowed Scholarship

History
This scholarship was established through the generosity of the late Alvin Florey Sloan, former Washington, New Jersey Mayor and community advocate.

Criteria
This is scholarship is to assist full time, degree-seeking, undergraduate students. Recipients must be a U. S. Citizen.

If an entering freshman, must have applied to FAMU and cleared for enrollment. (Minimum high school GPA of 3.0)

If currently enrolled, must be making reasonable progress toward graduation and in good standing with the University (Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8).

$1,000 per academic year


Gladys Gary Vaughn (Library) Scholarship,
The Southern Area of The Links, Incorporated


History
In 2003, the Southern Area of The Links, Incorporated established the Southern Area Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Scholarship Endowment Initiative. The vision was to establish endowments on the campuses of 49 HBCUs within the Southern Area boundary states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina) and one each in Nassau, Bahamas and South Africa.

Criteria
This scholarship is to provide support for undergraduate students. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 and must provide two (2) letters of reference, one of which must be from a current professor.

Award Amount
$500 (Fall Semester Only)

Rose B. Clay Williams Endowed Scholarship

History
This scholarship was established through the generosity of the late Mrs. Rose B. Clay Williams of Tampa, FL.

Criteria
This scholarship is to provide support for full-time undergraduate or graduate students, preferably from Tampa, Florida or the surrounding counties of Pasco, Polk, Hardee, Manatee and Pinellas counties. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 and must provide two (2) letters of reference, one of which must be from a current professor.

Award Amount

$1,000 per academic year


Dr. W. W. Weatherspool Endowed Scholarship

History
This award was established by the estate of, FAMU alumnus, Reverend Dr. W.W. Weatherspool who passed away in 1996 at the age of 100. Reverend Weatherspool was a dedicated teacher and minister who touched numerous lives with his moving sermons and spiritual writings.

Criteria
This scholarship is to provide need-based support for full-time undergraduate or graduate students with a minimum 3.0 GPA and a proven commitment to community service.

Students must have completed at least 20 hours of community/volunteer services during the current year and must supply a letter from the volunteer organization verifying community service.

This scholarship may be renewed; however, current recipients must re-apply each year and meet eligibility criteria.
