March 28, 2013U.S. Department of Defense Recommends FAMU for $1.9 Million Grant TALLAHASSEE, FL (March 28, 2013) Florida A&M University, Division of Research—–FAMU has received notification from the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) for recommended grant funding totaling more than $1.9 million to support research at the university for the next three years. The U.S. DOD Research and Education Program for Historically Black Colleges and Universities/Minority-Serving Institutions (HBCU/MI) provides support through the DOD’s U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command Army Research Office.

February 7, 2013Associate Professor Jennifer Cherrier Selected as a 2013 Leopold Leadership Fellows TALLAHASSEE, FL (February 7, 2013) Florida A&M University, Division of Research—–Jennifer Cherrier, Ph.D., an associate professor in the FAMU School of the Environment, has been selected as a 2013 Leopold Leadership Fellows. Cherrier is one of 20 environmental researchers from across North America to be awarded. She is first fellow to be selected from FAMU.

June 19, 2012FAMU Professor Gets U.S. Patent for Drug Discovery Cryptolepine will help combat infection in AIDS, chemotherapy and organ transplant patients TALLAHASSEE, FL (June 19, 2012) Florida A&M University, Division of Research—– Seth Ablordeppey, a Florida A&M University (FAMU) professor in the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, has received a United States patent (No. 8,158,646) for extensive modifications to the drug Cryptolepine. Preliminary tests indicate the drug will be effective at treating infections commonly found in HIV/AIDS, chemotherapy, and organ transplant patients. In addition, it has fewer side effects than several currently used drugs.

April 1, 2012FAMU Alumna, Mareena Robinson wins prestigious Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship TALLAHASSEE, FL (April 1, 2012) Florida A&M University, Division of Research—April 2012, Mareena Robinson was one of five students awarded the prestigious Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship (SSGF), which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DoE) National Nuclear Security Administration. Robinson is a first year doctoral student in the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, MA), with a focus on nuclear security. This fellowship program provides four-years of outstanding benefits and opportunities to students pursuing a Ph.D. degree in areas of interest to stewardship science, such as high-energy density physics, low-energy nuclear science, or properties of materials under extreme conditions.

March 7, 2012FAMU DoR Director of Technology Transfer Receives Patent TALLAHASSEE, FL (March 7, 2012) Florida A&M University, Division of Research—Tanaga A. Boozer, J.D., M.B.A., Director of Florida A&M University (FAMU), Office of Technology Transfer Licensing & Commercialization (OTTLC), has been awarded a U.S. Patent (U.S. 8,117,131 B2) titled, “Distributed Technology Transfer Department.” The system, also known as the Virtual Technology Transfer Office (VTTO) is a web-based system designed to substantially reduce the cost and expense of running a small technology transfer office. Two National Science Foundation (NSF) grants--Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Partnership for Innovation--and a Technology Commercialization Grant from the Leon County Research Authority supported the VTTO project.

January 23, 2012FAMU’S Division of Research Director, Office of Animal Welfare, Research and Integrity completed certification and voted new Diplomate American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM)affirmation TALLAHASSEE, FL (January 23, 2012) FAMU Division of Research, Tallahassee, FL— The Board of Directors with the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) voted Tanise L. Jackson, DVM (pictured left), as a new Diplomate into the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine recently, after she successfully completed the certification examination. ACLAM advances the humane care and responsible use of laboratory animals through certification of veterinary specialists, professional development, education and research. Dr. Jackson has served as Director, Office of Animal Welfare and Research Integrity, Division of Research (DoR) at Florida A&M University (FAMU) since 1997. She also serves as administrator for the University’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
