2011 Teacher Program

The Center for Water and Air Quality (Center) has developed an education support program for primary and secondary school teachers.  The program was initiated with a seed grant from the Dauphin Island Sea Lab to develop a summer program for middle and high school teachers focused on coastal education and stewardship.  During the summer of 2009, eight teachers participated in a two-week program that involved both field and classroom experiences.  Activities included constructing a web log to document program activities, a field trip to the Gulf Specimen Marine Lab, and educational programs by the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve

Through funding from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Center offers the FAMU Summer Teacher Coastal Stewardship Program.  The program is an outreach program for K-12 teachers in upstream watersheds that ultimately drain into the Gulf of Mexico.  The The intention of this program is to provide teachers with the skills, materials, knowledge, inspiration and enthusiasm to instill an appreciation and desire for stewardship of Gulf of Mexico in the next generation of citizens.

The program is designed as an extended field trip where teachers will travel along the Gulf Coast from Florida to Louisiana.  In addition to the Gulf Specimen Marine Lab and Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve, participants will also visit the Florida State University Coastal and Marine Lab, Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Estuarium (Alabama), Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (Mississippi), Stennis Space Center (Mississippi) and the University of New Orleans Pontrachartrain Institute for Environmental Sciences (Louisiana).
