Prior Enlisted Candidates

To all new Officer Candidates (OCs) and Marine Corps Enlisted Commissioning Education Programmers (MECEPs):

Please read the following guide to assist you in transitioning to your new duty station.

Tallahassee, FL is the capital city of Florida. It is ranked as the 126th largest city in the United States by population. The bulk of the city’s population is found in the student population and employees of the three main colleges: Florida A&M University, Florida State University, and Tallahassee Community College, making Tallahassee a quintessential college-town.

Tallahassee’s climate has one of the largest range in the state. Temperatures in the summer often exceed 100°F. In the winter, temperatures can dip down to the 20s. Housing can be found in abundance within five miles of your chosen college. Using an apartment finder is recommended to research your housing options before relocating. Rent can cost anywhere from $500-1200… reasonable enough for an E-5 to afford without the need for a roommate.

The initial point of contact for all prospective OCs is the Academic Advisor and Public Affairs Officer, LT Ryan Corridan For all MECEPs, the Marine Officer Instructor, Maj Rodney Daniels is your POC. After consulting with your advisor, they will assign a sponsor to answer any additional questions you may have, and assist you in making the transition to your new duty station.

On check-in day, please park your car on either Barbourville Dr. or Young St. A permit is required to park on FAMU’s campus, so to avoid ticketing and/or towing, battalion members park on the residential streets within walking distance of the Perry-Paige Bldg. The NROTC unit is located on S. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd, approximately 100 yds to the east of the running track, not to be confused with the Army ROTC building, which is located to the west of the track.

Since FAMU NROTC is a remote duty station, the nearest military base being NAS Jacksonville, you will need to contact Tricare to switch your health insurance to “Tricare Prime Remote.” This will allow you to receive medical/dental care at a civilian provider. Note that the civilian provider you choose must accept Tricare insurance.
