Enhancing Student International Service and Experiential Learning

Service Learning Experience in the Dominican Republic (USDA APHIS-IS and FAS, Summer 2018)

FAMU CAFS Global Minor students and faculty participated in a two-week international service learning experience in the Dominican Republic where they worked with APHIS-IS, FAS, and local public and private sector organizations on improving the quality and safety of horti-cultural products exported to Europe and the United States.

California - Mexico Experience: Trade, Export, and Global Food Security (Summer, 2018)

FAMU and Virginia State University (VSU) students visited the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) to learn about the work carried out in the Pest Quarantine and Trade and Export Centers in Sacramento, California. In Mexico, students studied MexFly and Screw worm sterile fly release techniques and the biological factors (food and livestock pests) that can influence the quality and safety of crops and livestock products relevant to the commodities of interest to FAS, as well as their effect on Global Food Security and Biosecurity (Summer 2018).

USDA and 1890 Universities Collaborate on International Agriculture Minor (2016-2018)

FAMU worked collaboratively with a Delaware State University (DSU), University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), and Tuskegee University (TU) on an International Agriculture Minor Program with  support from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Association of 1890 Agriculture Research Directors. 

As part of an initiative with the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service–International Services (APHIS -IS) and Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), the AGG 4952 Service Learning in International Agriculture course was established with FAMU’s Global Agriculture minor in 2017.

 

Study abroad in Costa Rica (Summer 2016)

Thirteen (13) students from DSU/FAMU/UMES and faculty from TU participated in a service learning experience to CATIE and EARTH University in Costa Rica.
