The southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (Linnaeus,) is a polyphagous pest. It is found throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America. It is considered as serious pests of numerous economic crops such as tomatoes, okra, soybeans, green beans, peas, cotton etc. Different control measures both chemical and biological are being used to manage this pest; however, there is currently no sustainable control measure to manage this pest. The insecticides pose a risk of contamination and environmental persistence. However, B. bassiana is a common soil borne fungus that occurs worldwide, attacking a wide range of both immature and adult insects. There are many different strains of the fungus that exhibit considerable variation in virulence, pathogenicity and host range. The goal is to know suitable strains of Beauveria bassiana in controlling various stages of southern green stink bug. In addition to the Standardize in vitro bioassay on various strains of Beauveria bassiana against the southern green stink bug. By In vitro culturing of various strains of B. bassiana, and evaluate the potentials of various strains of Beauveria bassiana in controlling the southern green stink bug. Consequently leads to investigate the sub-lethal effects of B. bassiana on N. viridula. Due to the nature of this research experiment and the tardiness of its onset, the closing stages have yet to be reached. An update will be added at a later date in time.

Various collections of the Southern Green Stink bug, Nezara viridula (Linnaeus), a polyphagous pest, were made in summer 2009 from farmer’s fields at different locations including Turkey Hill Farm, Crescent Moon Farm, and FAMU Community Garden in Tallahassee, Florida. A culture of this insect was successfully established on a diet of green beans, okra, peanuts, and young plants of beans (Blue lake bush) under the laboratory and the greenhouse. To achieve an environmental friendly control measure, we developed different indigenous strains of Beauveria bassiana, a cosmopolitan potential entomopathogen. Preliminary in vitro screening of the virulence, lethal and sub-lethal effects of the different isolates of the fungus under the laboratory conditions showed some promising results. Future work involve continuing to invigorate the insect culture with fresh field collections and screening further fungi strains to identify those that would be most effective in controlling the pest.
